Who the Girl Is

He was at VBS today. I tried avoided him as much as I could, and then I saw her again. She was hugging him. So, naturally, I walked by in my normal attire, and I talked to Mike's friend, Dave. Of course, he's tall, and muscular, and blonde, and really CUTE, but I'll never see him as more than a friend. I walk up to him. "Hey Dave!" and then I let a hug just happen to wrap around his neck. Call it a weak attempt to make Mike jealous. "How's it going?"

"Not to shabby," came Dave's reply.

"Glad to hear that! So, wha's up with you and Randi? I noticed you haven't talked to her all day." Dave and Randi. Such a cute couple!

"Um..." he stuttered. "We broke up last night. She doesn't think that we are best suited for each other. And I really love her."

"Oh. I'm sorry. I know how that is. Remember a couple of months ago?" I sincerely thought they'd go on forever! So my thoughts were genuine. I hate to see them break up.

"Yeah." He got this tender look in his eyes. Oh no! I DON'T want to go out with him!!! But my scheme worked. Mike stormed out of the rec area, and the girl soon followed.

"Dave, who's the girl with Mike?"

"I thought you were over him, the way you were just talking."

"I'll never be over him. So who is she?"

"She's..."

"Excuse me Kenni, can you watch the kindergarteners? I have to run Baylee to the office real fast." Mrs. Wright interrupted. I nodded. "Thanks! You're a pal!"

I looked at Dave. "Tell me later." I ran off to entertain the kindergarten class and teach them Amoeba Tag and make sure that no one got hurt. Dave was waiting for first grade to get to the rec center. Mrs. Wright came back, but now Dave was busy. I wanted to talk to him, but I knew I'd have to wait. We got breaks every fifteen minutes, so in fifteen minutes, he'd be free, and we could walk to the refreshments part of the family center. Only by that time, the girl found me. She looked like a ditzy cheerleader, to be honest.

"Hello," she said in a too-sweet voice.

"Hello," I replied.

"I'm Jessi, you know, Mike's new girlfriend?" She smiled. I don't like her.

"I'm Kenni, Mike's FIRST girlfriend, the first girl he's kissed, and the girl whom he has loved." I said in a bitter tone, but then I realized what I said. No one, not even Mike's girlfriend, deserved that. "I'm sorry, let me start over. I'm Kenni, and I've gone out with Mike too. You are a lucky girl."

She looked at me. "So you're the one that he always talks about? I lied. I'm not his girlfriend. I've asked him out, but he said someone else held his heart. I wish I could be you. I'll never be as lucky as you." Her eyes showed hurt.

"Thank you" I said humbly. "I hope that we can get to know each other better, despite the rough introductions."

"I hope so too." She walked off. Dave then found me....

"She's not going out with him. She's just very flirtatious, and I think a part of him wants you to be jealous so that you'll be back together." Tears filled my eyes.

"I think you nailed it. Excuse me. I need to go to the bathroom." I ran off and locked myself in the bathroom. "Get out of it, Kenni" I told myself. "Get up and tell him that you still love him!!!" I plunged my face into water, hoping to clear away the tears, but it didn't work. I still cried. After a while, I went back to Dave. "I'm going home. I don't feel well." He just looked at me and said for me to get well soon. I came home and cried. And then I called Sarah at Mike's grandparents, only Mike answered the phone. Could today get any worse? I hung up before I said anything, forgetting they had caller ID. A second later the phone rang.

"Kenni, Listen. I love you and I always will."

"I know."

"Ok, I was just making sure." Then he hung up again. Man, I wish I could just snap out of this!!!
